The literacy practices we support align with the science of reading. We work with schools, districts, and nonprofit organizations who want to move beyond traditional balanced literacy and infuse more research-based practices into their literacy block. This includes regular phonics instruction, skills-based small group instruction, and text-dependent reading, writing, and discussion.

Our core services include:

Flipped PD (Weekly PLCs)

Our flipped PD is a mix of asynchronous modules and synchronous meetings for participants to collaborate, troubleshoot, and plan together as they try out high-impact literacy practices with students.
Learn how to implement high-impact routines such as a multi-day fluency routine, a syllable and morpheme strategy for multisyllabic words, and a five-part structured literacy lesson. Find out more here.

The Literacy Leadership Network

Collaborative discussions, expert knowledge, tailored advice, downloadable resources, and live webinars.

Our TLA Literacy Leadership Network is a monthly membership that offers district and school leaders the time and space to stay informed, connected, and equipped with the latest research and expertise on the science of reading. As a member, you’ll gain access to exclusive resources, curated webinars, professional development opportunities, and a supportive community of literacy leaders to help you think through challenges around the implementation of literacy initiatives at your school. Self-paced PD

Course card collage

Our engaging asynchronous PD courses allow teachers to learn about evidence-based literacy instruction and rewatch and revisit concepts as needed. Each course takes 4–6 hours to complete, and topics include foundational reading and syllable instruction aligned to the science of teaching reading. Find out more here.

Literacy Coaching

A series of in-person or virtual coaching visits with frequent touchpoints that include targeted learning plans and pre- and post-observation conferences on the topics of teaching with grade-level text, implementing systematic and explicit phonics instruction, and analyzing data to form small groups.

What Our Clients Say

I have thoroughly enjoyed every single part of this course. It was very clear, concise and had the most applicable exercise. I loved that the quiz happened at the end of each section. I also appreciated that the instructor responded to some of the comments in the discussion section.

As a secondary teacher, I’ve never taught syllables or vowel sounds. This was entirely new learning that I enjoyed.

I truly enjoyed this course. The content is useful, the pacing is appropriate. The engagement level and expectations for activities is fair and applicable to current instruction. Highly recommend for all teachers of ELA, not just early literacy teachers. There is much to learn at the higher grade level also.

I am Candace B., and I am currently teaching first grade. Literacy Masterminds have helped me really hone in on the phonemic awareness and all of the arms of teaching literacy! I have a small group template that I can use and update weekly for individual students and my small groups. I felt supported by my facilitators and my team that I worked with! I learned quite a bit, including how the brain works when students are learning letters and sounds! I’ve been ignited!

I would strongly encourage my teaching colleagues to enroll in a Literacy Mastermind course. The instructors are motivating, in addition to knowledgeable. Further, while the content includes theory, it is also highly practical, enabling its quick and effective application in the classroom.

As someone who has always taught secondary, I found it very interesting to learn how to help students break down words into their syllable patterns for decoding. We have so many struggling readers; this will assist me in designing effective lessons to meet their needs.

The best thing about Literacy Masterminds is learning the science and the WHY behind everything we were learning. Having the tools and deliverables to immediately implement and do the work with our students has been so helpful. I would absolutely recommend Literacy Masterminds to a colleague who wanted to grow in their understanding and practice of teaching kids how to read!

It was really helpful to have a concrete plan about how to teach fluency when time is already scarce as it is. It truly makes me really excited and pumped to get started and move my kids along!
